28-30 September the DecomAtom project organized a conference in Chelyabinsk focusing on the Mayak spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plant in the concept of the decommissioning plan. During the conference a joint resolution for decommissioning was adopted.
The conference gathered environmentalists from all over Russia, Kazakhstan and Norway. 16 reports were presented during the conference causing discussion of conceptual approaches to the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, as well as possible solutions to the problems of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management.
One of the topics at the conference was the problems in the Chelyabinsk region caused by the transportation of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste from the Kola nuclear power plant to Mayak.
As a part of the conference the participants visited the village of Muslyuomovo on the day 52 years after the accident at the Mayak power plant. Read more about the Memorial Day in Muslyumovo
Highlights of the conference were outlined in a joint resolution focusing on the solutions of decommissioning. The resolution was sent to the Government, Rosatom, the Federal Assembly of Russia, and interested organizations.
