”Wasteland” – documentary premiere

The DecomAtom network will this week show the video documentary “Wasteland” in various cities in Northwest-Russia. The documentary is about the environmental consequences of the Mayak plant in the Ural Region in Russia.

The Mayak facility is a secret plant intended for weapon-grade plutonium production and spent nucelar fuel reprocessing. During the 60 years of its activity dozens of thousands square kilometers of the Russian territory was contaminated with the discharge of radioactive waste and became wasteland. As a result, hundred thousand people are victims to the Mayak activity.

Spent nuclear fuel from the Kola nuclear power plant is sent to Mayak for reprocessing. This week the DecomAtom network will show a documentary about the Mayak facility in various cities in Northwest-Russia. "Wasteland" will be screened in Sosnovy Bor, St. Petersburg, Kandalaksha, Apatity and Murmansk.

February 21 - Apatity, DDYT, 14 PM
February 22 - Murmansk Regional Children and Youth Library, 14 PM

Members of the DecomAtom network will be present at the screenings and will answer questions from the audience and journalists. Environmental organizations from Chelyabinsk, near the Mayak plant will also take part.
